Research Scientist

Overview : Perform computation-based structural and thermal engineering simulations for additive manufacturing, structural modeling, and analysis of composite structures for various clients in the aerospace, automotive, defense, and energy industries. Perform de-homogenized multi-scale progressive failure analysis to assess the mechanical performance of composite structures subject to static, dynamic, fatigue, and impact loadings and report findings to senior staff. Analyze fracture initiation, evolution, damage propagation, and static tensive stress-strain behaviors for ceramic matrix composites and metallic alloys. Perform micro-mechanic and finite element analysis to study the effects of voids and surface roughness on service loading strength and ductility. Evaluate the temperature-dependent mechanical and thermal properties of metallic and polymer components in order to predict residual stresses and distortions due to heat transfer during the additive manufacturing process. Leverage knowledge of computational fluid mechanics to assist development teams in designing engineering simulation software.

Requirements: The position requires a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field. Skills and knowledge in Computational Fluid Mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, Heat Transfer Analysis, Abaqus, ANSYS, and Fortran. The position involves incidental travel - 1% of time, not more than several days a few times per year.
